flow :: Flow When It Can, Rest Where It Must.

특히 9번째 앨범 「a Sign (징조)」과 10번째 앨범 「Waterspiders in the Speed Era (스피드 시대의 워터 스파이더)」는 그 시기의 상태를 반영한 결과물이었다.

flow :: Flow When It Can, Rest Where It Must.
In the animated series Inspector Gadget, which I loved as a child, each episode would begin only after a mission message had been delivered and then immediately burned or exploded into nothing. It was always a comic moment, but also a concise way of revealing the character of Gadget himself. A sentence that fulfills its function the moment it is received, and has no reason to remain. While writing this text, I found myself thinking of those scenes again, and wondered if this text, too, might become something like that. Something that lingers for a moment while being read, and is already fading by the time one leaves the exhibition. It does not need to serve as an explanation of the work, nor does it need to leave behind any clear interpretation. If all that remains is the fact that it stayed for a brief moment and then passed, perhaps that would be enough.
Flow exists in far more varied ways than we usually recognize. Air and water, heat and energy, all move according to differences between states, and such movement appears less as the result of intention than as part of nature’s ongoing effort to find balance. In some places it moves quickly; in others it lingers almost imperceptibly. Flow is always formed in relation to its surroundings, and the moment those relations shift, it takes on another form as if nothing had happened. The same water changes direction according to the terrain; the same air behaves differently under different conditions. Flow does not insist on itself. It simply takes shape within the conditions given to it, and changes quietly with them.
We often try to understand the world through the linear progression of time. We imagine events arranged along a continuous line from past to present to future, with causes and effects linking one moment to the next. But in lived experience, things are rarely explained so clearly. Some events seem to offer reasons we can guess at, while others leave us uncertain as to what their cause ever was. Things that appear unrelated may connect in unexpected ways, and a certain flow may arise without any clear reason at all.
For that reason, a view of the world grounded only in chains of causality may not be enough. Some changes seem to reveal themselves more clearly through the relations formed when different conditions meet than through the order of time itself. Not cause, but contact. Not explanation, but arrangement. Not reason, but relation. From within relation, the world appears to be composed a little more loosely than we are used to thinking.
Seen this way, flow may be less the forward movement of time than a movement produced through the relations among different conditions. Water does not flow simply because time passes, but because it remains in constant relation to terrain, pressure, temperature, and other surrounding forces. Flow may be a process of moving in a certain direction, but it may also be the way relations themselves change. When I look back on my own life, it too feels less like one great continuous flow than like a series of tiny breaks and connections. Memory does not unfold smoothly. It is scattered more like fragments, with unexplained gaps left between them. We try to fill those gaps in order to understand time, but sometimes the empty places themselves remain most vividly.
The mind shifts dozens of times in a single day. Certain thoughts rise briefly and disappear. Emotions are not singular, and judgment is rarely firm. Some moments are forgotten at once, while certain images remain for no reason at all. There is no clear measure for what stays. It is not always what was important, nor what was intense.
For a long time, I have been drawn to such small moments. Not distinct events or clear emotions, but sensations that resist explanation. Things that certainly existed, yet cannot be held. Things too small, too fast, too faint to be remembered, and that for precisely that reason remain even more distinctly. The moment they are named, they become something else; the moment one tries to explain them, they have already begun to disappear. So rather than trying to capture them, I wanted to find a way to let them stay for a while. Perhaps as music, or perhaps as a space.
Lately I have found myself wondering whether music might also exist in a similar way. We are accustomed to understanding music as a structure unfolding in time, something with a beginning, a development, and an end, like a kind of narrative. But from another perspective, music may be less a sequence of events than a field formed through relations among different sounds. A sound gains meaning through its distance from other sounds; when a tone is sustained, the surrounding silence takes on another character. When a new sound appears, the resonance that came before it is heard differently. Sounds affect one another and create a space. In this sense, music grows closer to a landscape made by relations than to a mere flow of time.
Within such relations, music moves away from linear narrative. Sounds do not simply advance in a straight line, but reflect one another and form a field. Some sounds flow, some linger, and some spread in unforeseen directions. At times, a very small sound can change the mood of everything, while an almost inaudible resonance can make space itself feel more distinct. Flow does not always mean movement alone. In living, one comes to realize that lingering, too, is part of flow. When water gathers, its surface forms another landscape; it may appear still, yet relations within it continue to shift. So it is in music as well: certain sounds remain for a while and reveal the space around them. That lingering is not a break, but another form of flow.
It was from such thoughts that ECHO & FLOW began. For quite a long time, pressure and densely layered experiences had served as the source from which I made music. In particular, my ninth album, a Sign, and tenth album, Waterspiders in the Speed Era, were works that reflected the condition of that period. I wanted to express, through music, the sensations that had accumulated within repetitive environments and states of tension, and in some sense the music also became a way of release for myself.
But after moving through that time, another question remained. I began to wonder whether my work had been repeating itself within certain forms, and whether I had failed to fully reveal myself within them. So I wanted, instead of following a particular form or genre, to try following the sensations I was feeling as they were.
The two words that surfaced naturally in that process were “flow” and “echo.” Flow is the movement of relations continuing onward, while echo is the moment when something that seemed to have disappeared returns in another way. The two may appear to move in different directions, but they seem to repeat within the same process. The project ECHO & FLOW is an attempt to record that repetition. Some sounds pass through, some sensations return, some moments disappear, and some traces remain. In between, we move on without ever fully knowing what it was that passed through us.
In this work, I have thought of the album as a way of recording the flow made by sound, while the exhibition is a way of experiencing that flow within space. Music moves through the ear, while the exhibition continues through the movement of the body and the direction of one’s gaze. They are different modes, but they share the same question: where does flow begin, where does it linger, and where does it lead next? This project unfolds within the larger frame of ECHO & FLOW, and this particular exhibition and album remain a little closer to flow itself. Once this work comes to an end, it seems likely that it will lead naturally toward a direction that places more weight on echo. As for what might come after that, or what thoughts will remain once both parts are complete, I do not yet know.
Still, I hope that passing slowly through these two themes, flow and echo, will become meaningful time for me. Even if I arrive at no definite conclusion, I hope that by moving through this process I may come to understand a little more clearly what it was I had been looking at, and what kinds of sounds I had wanted to hold onto. Perhaps what we experience is not so much the flow of time as something closer to a landscape of relations—a field shaped by things meeting, touching, dispersing, and remaining. This album and exhibition are only a record of one person’s quiet sensibility, pausing for a moment within that landscape and looking at it. And if this text, too, can remain as nothing more than a small trace that briefly appeared and then disappeared within that flow, that would be enough.
